Adapting Vacuum Conveyance to a Landmark Residential Development

Monterey Park Condominium

D’Leedon is a premium 36-storey condominium in Singapore’s prime District 10. Renowned for its iconic design by Zaha Hadid, the upscale development features 1,715 apartments, 12 villas, and 8 retail units in an exclusive residential setting.

The diverse features of the property and its upscale status necessitate Greenwave to implement its single-fraction gravity vacuum PWCS to manage the condominium unit’s unique demands

  • Managing refuse from 1,700+ units, villas, and retail spaces requires a robust single-fraction gravity vacuum system.

  • System must deliver consistent performance in a premium, high-rise environment without disrupting residents’ upscale living standards.

Implementation Approach

To address the diverse needs in a condominium complex, Greenwave implemented a single-fraction gravity vacuum Pneumatic Waste Conveyance System (PWCS) that comprises 42 intake points, connecting each building’s refuse chutes to approximately 1.75 km of underground pneumatic piping.

Each intake point is equipped with odor-control features, such as self-closing louver flaps and “breakfall” chute liners.

At the central bin centre, two mobile compactors store and compress the collected waste, handling up to ~40 m³ of refuse per day. An integrated air filtration system treats all exhaust air, ensuring that no foul odors escape during operation.

Greenwave’s team coordinated with public utilities to route the main 508 mm refuse pipeline beneath an existing PUB water main without disrupting water service. The majority of the 1.75 km pipe network was laid underground and secured along the basement slab of the development

The design also introduced double-level discharge valve (DV) rooms: each tower’s refuse chute terminates in a two-tier service room, allowing maintenance personnel to safely access the discharge valve from a lower level.

“This was one of the most technically demanding PWCS projects we’ve delivered – from routing vacuum pipes, to custom-designing maintenance solutions for a luxury estate. It truly showcased our team’s engineering ingenuity and commitment to safety in execution.”

In summary

Highlights

Solved Complex Site Constraints.

  • Routed vacuum pipeline under an active PUB water main

  • Above-ground pipes are acoustically insulated to reduce noise impact

  • Installed 1.75 km of underground pipes with minimal disruption

Optimised for Space and Aesthetic Constraints.

  • Tank rooms built with <1.5 m headroom to avoid GFA usage

  • Freed up space for landscaping and residential amenities

  • Bin centre layout designed to remain compact and discreet

Premium-grade Environmental Control.

  • Intake valves fitted with odour-blocking flaps and chute liners

  • Air exhaust treated with activated carbon and filtration

  • Reduced noise and truck traffic from fewer collection trips

  • Prevented odour intrusion near high-end villas and homes
