Background

Sustainable Waste Solutions for a Multi-Use Riverfront Development

Monterey Park Condominium

Union Square is a planned mixed-use development project, connecting Clarke Quay riverfront with the CBD fringe, with a completion date targeted for 2028.

The project emphasises sustainability and ESG goals in its design, where a sophisticated waste management system was planned to efficiently handle the diverse waste streams from Union Square’s residential, commercial, and hospitality activities.

  • Residential, commercial, co-living, and hospitality activities require an adaptable system to handle multiple disposal patterns.

  • Waste infrastructure must support the project’s sustainability goals, with monitoring and reporting features for real-time tracking.

Implementation Approach

Green Wave Solutions (GWS) implemented an integrated waste management solution tailored to Union Square’s mixed-use layout. In the residential tower, a two-fraction AIRWASTE pneumatic collection system was installed, featuring dual chutes for separate disposal of general waste and recyclables.

For the office and retail components, a high-performance mobile waste compactor with an integrated bin lifter was provided. Additionally, a proprietary Waste Measurement Solution was deployed, allowing building management to track waste generation continuously and accurately.

The data is logged and can be accessed through a digital dashboard, supporting the project’s ESG objectives by providing transparency in waste handling. Notably, the automated monitoring capability also opens the possibility for user-level waste tracking and pay-as-you-throw billing in the future.

The system integrates a dual-fraction AIRWASTE chute for residential strata and mobile compactors with bin lifters for commercial areas. Real-time sensors monitor waste and recyclables, transmitting data to a central dashboard for reporting and optimisation.

By combining pneumatic conveyance with automated measurement, the solution aligns with ESG objectives, reduces haulage frequency, and enhances operational efficiency across the mixed-use development.

“Union Square demonstrates how modern waste systems can support both operational efficiency and ESG accountability, turning a basic utility into a transparent, data-driven service for sustainable urban living.”

Expertise in complex PWCS Projects

Union Square’s waste management system is a comprehensive, technologically advanced solution that meets the unique demands of a high-density, multi-use complex.

By reducing on-site refuse storage and haulage needs, the system helps cut down on truck traffic and emissions associated with waste collection, while real-time waste tracking further adds a layer of intelligence. This demonstrates a successful alignment of innovative waste infrastructure with sustainability objectives.
