Background

Integrating Waste Solutions into a Green Healthcare Environment

Khoo Teck Puat Hospital (KTPH) is a 795-bed general and acute care hospital in Yishun serving over 550,000 residents in northern Singapore.

Opened in 2010, the hospital combines high-quality medical expertise with a green, energy-efficient design that puts healing and wellness at the forefront of its operations.

  • With nearly 800 beds and extensive outpatient services, the hospital requires a robust waste system to manage large daily volumes of general and medical waste.

  • Any waste solution must support KTPH’s sustainability principles, complementing its energy-efficient and healing-focused architecture.

Implementation Approach

The project involved a full upgrade of Khoo Teck Puat Hospital’s (KTPH) PWCS for general waste and soiled linen. Greenwave replaced outdated vacuum exhausters, loading stations, control systems, and compactors.

The new setup includes smart SCADA control with remote monitoring, RFID-enabled stations, energy-efficient suction units, and upgraded linen collection systems. All pneumatic valves, air dampers, and cabling were renewed for better hygiene, performance, and reliability.

The solution supports real-time monitoring, improved user experience for staff, and aligns with KTPH’s quiet, patient-first environment—delivering a system that’s smarter, quieter, and more efficient.

Greenwave coordinated closely with KTPH facilities teams to phase the works by zone and schedule during off-peak hours to ensure no disruption to patient services.

The team navigated dense M&E infrastructure and ageing legacy systems, replacing cabling, pipes, and mechanical parts within tight shaft spaces—akin to “performing open-heart surgery” on a running system.

The new control system was run in parallel before switchover. Strict hygiene protocols, site containment, and night-time works enabled complex installations to be completed safely.

“Retrofitting a live hospital’s waste system was like replacing an engine mid-flight—every upgrade had to be surgically precise, invisible to patients, and absolutely reliable from day one.”
